Because of our ongoing frustration in trying to partner with DYFS to foster and adopt, I started doing some research this week and made phone calls to other agencies in the state. Turns out there are other agencies that we could work with directly who place foster children and who have higher rates of successful adoptions, and it all goes through the state like it would with DYFS, but saves you the headache that DYFS inevitably causes. I was so excited to discover this!
Unfortunately, just as my excitement grew, it was crushed. NJ just passed a law that says that once you are a licensed foster home, you can't switch agencies easily. We would have to shut down our home for 12 months (meaning not have any foster children, which obviously we wouldn't do) then start up the licensing process all over again with our chosen agency. Which doesn't help us out at all. So we're stuck with DYFS for a while.
God help us.
