Highly Recommend

Yesterday was Mike's birthday! To celebrate we went out to Pizzeria Uno, which used to be a favorite spot of ours in Mass. but we haven't been there in quite some time. I think we're not used to huge dinners anymore...we didn't even have room for their amazing cookie/ice cream concoction which is pretty much the reason we go there. Oh well. My hips thank me for it.

Anyway, afterwards we went and spent the giftcard I received from my boss at work for Christmas and saw "The Great Debators", directed by and starring the great Denzel Washington. We HIGHLY recommend this movie.

It's based on a true story of the debate team of a small all-Black college in Texas' rise to greatness and triumph over adversity. It's story of hope, the importance of education, and determination set against the backdrop of the racial tension that existed in such prevalence in the South in the 50's. We left feeling inspired, Mike especially, as we watched the message of how education, opportunity and one man's belief can change the lives of teenagers. I encourage you to see it! (Besides, you get to stare at Denzel for 90 minutes! What more could you ask for in a movie, really?)
On a heavier note, Mike had a rough bus drive home after program yesterday. One of his kids was hit by a paint ball outside of his program by a ninth grader who used to attend program (this kid had come and hung out all day causing trouble and had been asked to leave, came back with the gun, and the kid who was hit had to go to the hospital). Later, as Mike was driving kids home in Crestbury, which is a rough development near our house, random kids (random meaning unknown to Mike or his kids) pelted the bus with rocks. When he got out to talk to them, he was hit with rocks as well. It was a really frustrating afternoon for him, as you can imagine. It seems like he's getting a lot of opposition right now, which means he's probably making headway for the Kingdom, and someone's not too happy about that. Please be praying for spiritual protection for Mike and I and for his camp.
Must get back to work!

Thanks for the movie recommendation :) I'll need to be sure to check it out.

I will also be praying that God places a hedge of protection around Mike, you and the program while he works so hard to advnace the kingdom. (wow that sounds so Mrs.Hicks of me - ack! But it's true and I will ;)
